Pay your rent

Different ways to pay your rent, why paying your rent is important, and what happens if you don't pay.

Ways to pay your rent

You can pay your rent in a number of different ways:

  • Direct from your bank account by Direct Debit/Standing Order
  • With your credit or debit card online
  • With your credit or debit card over the phone
  • In person at Post Offices and Paypoint and e-pay outlets

Direct from your bank account

There are two ways to pay direct from your bank account - Direct Debit and Standing Order. These methods allow you to choose when the payment leaves your account, and are a simple, safe and convenient way to pay.

Paying your rent or service charges by Direct Debit is safe, convenient and environmentally friendly. The money is automatically taken from your bank account monthly on a date of your choice. This means you don't have to remember to make the payment, and you can be sure that we have received your rent and service charges on time.

If you need to cancel the direct debit, you simply contact your bank or building society.

To set up a Direct Debit, you will need to download and complete a Direct Debit instruction form (pdf) and return it to us. We will then contact your bank or building society and begin to debit your account on a monthly basis.

A Standing Order moves money from your bank account to another account, and allows you to specify the date and frequency of payment.

To set up a Standing Order, you will need to download and complete a mandate form (pdf) and return it to your bank or building society. Please ensure the Rent Number field is completed before sending off your form.

What your rent is used for

  • To pay for repairs and maintenance
  • To manage your housing service
  • To repay money borrowed to build or modernise your home

Problems paying?

If you fall behind with your rent, your account goes into ‘arrears’. First of all, we will keep you informed about how much you owe us. We will then look for ways that you can pay your rent and clear the debt.

While you are in arrears, we will give you practical advice. We’ll also point you to organisations that help people having problems paying their bills. If your arrears increase, we will serve a ‘Notice’. This is a legal document letting you know that we may take legal action to recover the debt.

We will try to come to an arrangement with you to pay off your debt. At this stage, it’s important that you tell us about your situation every time you contact your Customer Account Manager, to keep to the arrangement you have agreed with us. If we cannot come to an arrangement, you could be evicted from your home.

View and manage your rent balance online

Checking your rent balance online is quick and easy. It saves you speaking to our call centre and it definitely beats waiting for your rent statement to come through the post. You can also check a repair status and see your repairs history.
