Tackling Homelessness

Making better use of housing stock in London seminar 2010

Thank you to everyone who attended our seminar on tackling the use of housing stock to overcome homelessness and overcrowding.
Thank you to our speakers: Councillor Marc Francis, Belinda Porich, Alan Benson and also thank you to the people who hosted our workshops: Sandra Skeete, Helen Day, Andrea O'Callaghan, Rachel Blake, Dave Anteh and Kate Worley.

Notes from the presentations and further information from the event will be loaded onto this page over the next day or two. We will also be loading photos and comments from the day.
Since our first conference on Tackling Homelessness in London in February 2009, housing Associations, charities and local authorities have worked together to find effective ways to tackle these issues.

We have made progress in tackling homelessness in London. There are fewer rough sleepers in London today and less households in temporary accommodation. There have been increased nominations for homeless families from housing associations with an emphasis on tenancy sustainment. Greater partnerships between Local Aothorities and RSL’s has resulted in some great work, together with the g15 Homelessness Offer launched in 2008.

However, our big issue continues to be overcrowding. At the moment, over 200,000 households in London are overcrowded and in the past decade, the number of overcrowded households has risen by a third. 1 in every 8 social rented households are overcrowded and although reduced, there are still high levels of temporary accommodation in London (41,000).

Something needs to be done and today’s seminar is for us to continue to work
together to eliminate homelessness in London and look at ways of using housing
stock more effectively to help overcrowded families.
