Christine Bowden, Deputy Mayor of Newham, has opened an East Homes development of one and two bedroom apartments and three bedroom houses, all rated EcoHomes Excellent, on Earlham Grove in Forest Gate.

Built in partnership with developers Indecon, Adler Court is made up of 13 one and two bedroom apartments and two three bedroom houses, all with balconies and generous internal space. The houses are built upside down, with the living rooms on the first floor. These are south facing to allow for maximum heat and light from the sun and help residents cut down on heating costs.

Adler Court achieves EcoHomes Excellent status, in line with East Homes’ commitment to providing environmentally sustainable homes. Features include timber obtained from sustainable sources, low levels of internal water usage and surface water run off and various ecological features including bat and bird boxes. These features help residents to reduce their carbon footprint and save money on their energy bills.

The majority of the homes at Adler Court, all rented out to local residents living in the area, were offered through East Homes’ Rent Now, Buy Later scheme, which recently won Best Marketing Award at the Housebuilding Innovation Awards. Rent Now, Buy Later helps first-time buyers get on the housing ladder by offering the chance to rent their home for up to five years at a reduced rate before choosing to buy a share.

The site of the homes was acquired from The United Synagogue Trust and the site’s 128-year Jewish history has been respectfully retained. A stone plaque kept from the synagogue has been made it into a prominent feature in the communal garden and Adler Court is named after one of the long serving Rabbis of the former synagogue.

East Homes is part of East Thames Group, a housing association that owns and manages more than 13,500 affordable homes across east London and Essex, with almost a third of these in Newham.

Christine Bowden, Deputy Mayor of Newham, said during her speech: “Adler Court is a shining example of the kind of quality housing that we would like to see throughout Newham. Not only is the development eco-friendly but the homes provide ample living space for their occupants. These homes will make such a difference to people’s lives. Congratulations to everyone involved, and thank you for investing in Newham.”

David Lunts, London Regional Director at the HCA, said, “It is great to see this project getting the recognition it deserves, and our involvement highlights the way the HCA looks outside the box to achieve good quality eco friendly homes above the set standards.”

Trevor Burns, assistant director of development at East Thames, said: “We’re not surprised that these homes have been snapped up so quickly. They’re a great example of affordable homes, with excellent space standards and eco-friendly features to help residents reduce their bills and their carbon footprint. We’re pleased to have been able to offer these homes through our Rent Now Buy Later scheme, which continues to provide an affordable route to home ownership for hundreds of households.”

Nick Hall, Managing Director of Indecon Building Limited, said during his speech
: “We’re very pleased that this scheme has been well-received by the residents and our partners. We’re very fortunate to have been part of a strong project team and look forward to working with East Thames again in future.”
